In the 2-day mixed media workshop, we will create either an 8 X 10" wall hanging or a 10 X 10" mirror. You'll learn how to create your own tessarae with polymer clay using a variety of techniques including stamping, painting, and gold leafing. You'll also learn how to embellish glass tiles, transfer images onto clay, and mosaic with beads.  You'll combine all three media into an abstract mosaic that is not grouted. This class is open to students at all levels.

October in Barcelona with Amy  Marks Mosaics and S&S Tours

Discover the Magic of Barcelona:  A cultural tour for mosaic enthusiasts and lovers of art & architecture

October 3-11 2015

Architectural landmarks by Antoni Gaudi, the art of Picasso and Dali, mosaics, mosaics, mosaics plus beautiful beaches, scrumptious food and cava (wine) make this historic, cosmopolitan city on the Mediterranean a must see.

When I became hooked on mosaics, I wanted to go to Barcelona. It’s been a while, but I’m  finally getting there. I hope you’ll join me on this journey!

Sagrade Familia in BarcelonaWe’ll start in Barcelona and get to know Gaudi. We’ll visit Parc Güell, Gaudi's House and Museum and Sagrade Familia. Later in the week, we’ll see La Pedrera, one of the Gaudi's amazing creations named a Unesco World Heritage site and Casa Battlló, a remodeled nineteenth century building that is one of Gaudí's many masterpieces.

They’ll be plenty of free time to wander, through the Gothic quarter and the waterfront, visit museums, enjoy the cafes, sip wine, taste the tapas, and, of course, shop. The weather should be great - in the mid 70’s. What’s not to like?

No trip to Barcelona is complete without visiting the surroundings. We’ve planned three days of excursions.

We’ll drive into the mountains and visit the Benedictine Monastery in  Montserrat, then take the wine and cava route through. We’ll visit a wine cellar and taste the cava. No worries, you won’t need to drive home.

Next we’ll take a walking tour through the Medieval  quarter of Girona, one of the most historic cities in Catalonia. We’ll see the old city walls and fortified enclosures. Then we’re off to Figures for some culture. The Dalí Theatre-Museum, the world’s largest surrealist object, follows Salvator Dali’s artistic journey from surrealism to nuclear mysticism.

Our last excursion is to Sitges. This beautiful small city right on the water is known for it’s Carnival, film festival and for its Malvasia wine, made from grapes descending from Ancient Greece! You’ll have time to shop, walk on the beach, enjoy a leisurely meal in a cafe, relax and taste the wine!
